Ah yes, the good ol' Nintendo. Back then, before the technological advances, when kids didn't worry about how they dressed, when we still acted like KIDS, Nintendo was the shit. If you were lucky enough to have parents who bought you a piece of the action, or in the instance you didn't, and you would go over to your friend's house to use his console, this post is dedicated to those memories.
I'm talking about being 4 or 5 when you touched this system, your first true gaming experience. If you just bought one this year and started off with SUPER NES or SEGA Genesis, then you just can't relate.
I remember Christmas in 1989, waking up early to open up my gifts. Having a hunch that I would be getting a Nintendo, I opened the biggest present to find it. We set it up and from then on, Nintendo took place of breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Duckhunt, Super Mario Bros. was the first game we had. I remember Duckhunt used to be so hard as a kid if you sat far enough from the screen, cause you just didn't get the concept of aiming. So you'd stick the gun right up to the screen and follow the birds and you'd eventually rack up the highest score. And Mario was honestly not made for kids back then. It was the game that no matter how hard you tried, you'd fail miserably, and as a kid, it really hurt your ego. Kids would come to school bragging about beating it, but funny thing was, no one could ever describe the ending. LOL. The 2D graphics made every Nintendo game a side scroller, and it didn't ever get better then that.
Nowadays you have memory cards, save your data, and really if you try hard enough, with access to codes, strategy guides or whatever else, it's easy to beat any game. But back then, once you die, or turn off your system, all the data's gone, no more.
Then there was the Gameboy.

Green LCD screen with black lines. The most basic 2 button control with Directional Pad. Gameplay was terrible, and so were music and graphics, but they kept you entertained for hours on end. If you put in batteries that damn Gameboy would drain the life out of them in a good 10 hours. You constantly had to sit on the floor with your back near the wall close to the nearest plug, so you could use the a/c adapter to finish your games. Ah the memories.
Games back then were fun. Not too complex, very cartoony, and extremely entertaining. Nowadays I feel like kids aren't getting to experience the same kind of things we did, and it makes them grow up way too fast. Growing up using consoles like XBOX 360 and PS3 is amazing, technologically speaking, but what next? They will expect more realistic looking games as they grow up, and to me, what's the point of playing video games if it's made to look like reality?
So in conclusion, go out get a Nintendo if you've never tried it. Chances are you'll get bored after half an hour if you can't relate to anything i've said, cause if you've grown up playing playstation or xbox, you just won't have the same love for it. And prepare to blow the shit out of the games. It comes with the territory.
